<p> Dataium, the largest aggregator of online automotive shopper behavior, today announced the release of its annual Social Media report that examines the influence of Facebook and other social media websites on automotive shopping behavior. The report, based on online automotive shopping events from a database of over 100 million active auto shoppers, details the impact of social media on visits, vehicle searches, inventory views and leads on automotive dealership websites. In addition to the report, the company also offers subscriptions to their social media dashboard which can be customized to provide social media influence around a specific make, model, DMA or by an individual website.</p>

<p>According to Dylan Snyder, Senior Manager, Business Intelligence at Dataium, &#8220;There has been much discussion in the automotive industry surrounding the importance of incorporating Facebook and other social media outlets as part of an overall marketing strategy. Because of this, we&#8217;ve developed the Social Media report which aims to help car dealers and their marketing agencies determine how much return they are getting from these social channels.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>The report shows that many dealerships are successfully utilizing Facebook to generate new visitors. While only 0.45% of shoppers have been referred directly from Facebook to a dealership website, 94% of those referrals are visiting the dealership website for the first time. In addition, 27% of those first time visitors return to the dealership website after their initial visit, compared to a 22% return for the average shopper. In terms of vehicle views, 36% of shoppers referred by Facebook view at least one vehicle, compared to 32% of shoppers who were referred by other websites. Interestingly however, Facebook shoppers view an average of only two vehicles compared to other shoppers who on average view five vehicles.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Mr. Snyder noted, &#8220;The data shows that Facebook is a good approach to getting new visitors to dealership sites. The lead to visitor ratio, which is less than half of our network average, is disappointingly low, however. This highlights that dealerships cannot rely on facebook alone; traditional methods are still needed to turn these new visitors into leads.&#8221;</p>

<p> The Joplin Hackathon held the last weekend in April to develop a new government website for the city that was ravaged by an EF-5 tornado nearly a year ago, reached a successful conclusion Sunday evening, April 29. Nine teams of Midwest designers and programmers armed with laptops, headphones and a packet of criteria from city officials worked tirelessly during the weekend competition sponsored by CivicPlus, the leading developer of comprehensive community engagement websites for local government.</p>

<p>In the year since the tornado took more than 160 lives in Joplin, the city has focused on the continuous job of rebuilding houses, businesses and its community. According to Joplin Mayor Melodee Colbert-Kean, “This Hackathon is another form of rebuilding Joplin… It’s helping us to rebuild Joplin’s digital home.”</p>

<p>Teams were tasked to build innovative solutions in three areas: overall web design, functionality for emergency management and functionality for community engagement. Judges from the City of Joplin, Joplin Chamber of Commerce, GovLoop.com and CivicPlus determined the winning entries. “The talent showcased this weekend was amazing,” said Hackathon Judge Brian Rempe, chief technology/ strategy officer for CivicPlus. “The first place teams were only separated by a point or two from their competitors. Everyone should feel good about what they did here for Joplin.”</p>

Many were on site during the Hackathon to meet with city leaders throughout the weekend to orchestrate content migration from the seven different websites the City will house under its single redesigned website.</p>

<p>CivicPlus is donating over a million dollars worth of services and support to the City, including its premium website package, best-practice training, 24/7 support, and a waiver of annual maintenance and hosting fees, for as long as the City and CivicPlus remain in partnership.</p>

<p> Dave Lavinsky, President of leading entrepreneurial consulting firm Growthink, Inc., has recently revealed exactly what a venture capitalist is, what they are looking for, and how entrepreneurs can go about raising venture capital.</p>

<p>“A venture capital firm is a financial institution that focuses on providing capital, in the form of equity, to companies who offer them the prospects of significant growth.  The partners and associates at venture capital firms are known as venture capitalists. The term &#8220;VC&#8221; or &#8220;VCs&#8221; applies to both venture capital firms and venture capitalists,” said the President and co-found of Growthink, Inc., whom since 1999 have helped 500,000 entrepreneurs start and grow their own company.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>“Unlike angel investors, who invest their own money, VCs are professional institutions that invest other people&#8217;s money. VC firms raise capital for their own funds from sources which primarily include pension funds, financial and insurance companies, endowments and foundations, individuals and families, and corporations.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>The VCs are then charged with providing a solid return on investment on this money. This is the one thing that every VC wants. By providing a solid ROI to their investors, VCs earn bonuses and raise more funds so they can stay in business.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>VCs earn returns for their investors by finding high growth companies, making investments in them at favorable terms, guiding and nurturing them, and enacting a liquidity event (e.g., selling the company or having it complete an initial public offering).”</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>According to Lavinsky, venture capitalists are extremely rigorous in their investment decision-making process because they are utilizing other people&#8217;s money, and are judged and compensated by the performance of their investments.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>As a result, VCs tend to only invest in companies with significant market potential of $  50 million, $  100 million or more. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>“This is because even with all their relevant experience, the average venture capital firm will lose money on half the companies they invest in and only break even on a third,” Lavinsky says.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>“Where VCs make their money is on the approximately 20% of companies they invest in that see explosive growth and provide remarkable returns of 10 times to 100 times or more on their investment. Industry insiders sometimes refer to the 2:6:2 rule. This rule is that an average portfolio of ten VC investments will include two losses (e.g., companies go bankrupt), six moderately performing companies (may break-even on the investment or lose a little) and two very successful returns.”</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Lavinsky also reported how an analysis by Bygrave and Timmons of VC funding found that just 6.8% of investments returned ten times or more on the invested capital. Conversely over 60% of investments lost money or failed to exceed the amount of money earned if the capital had been put in an interest-bearing bank account, according to Lavinsky’s findings.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>“The result of this analysis is that typically a venture capitalist will want to see the ability to get 10X their money back or more from investing in your company (they are seeking ‘home run’ investments which compensate for the 60% of their investments that don&#8217;t pan out) . As such, for every $  1 million you are seeking from VCs, you must show them a realistic scenario where you can turn it into $  10 million,” said Lavinsky.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Lavinsky is keen to highlight that the primary goal of a venture capitalist is to make significant money from investing in an entrepreneur. As a result, the entrepreneur needs to show them how they can earn a 10X return.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>“If your company can potentially give VCs a 10X return, then seeking venture capital might be right for you,” he said.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>To help entrepreneurs find a venture capitalist for their company, Lavinsky has also revealed his simple step-by-step plan:</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>1. Develop a list of VC firms</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Lavinsky recommends that entrepreneurs start by creating a list of venture capital firms.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>2. Narrow the list</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>“Each venture capital firm invests based on particular characteristics (e.g., some only invest in software firms), so you need to make sure your list only includes VCs that are interested in your type of venture,” said Lavinsky.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>3. Make sure the VC is active</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>According to Lavinsky, many VC firms that have websites aren&#8217;t active and aren&#8217;t making new investments. “You don&#8217;t want to waste your time contacting and talking with these firms,” Lavinsky says.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>4. Find the appropriate person to contact</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>This is a critical step, according to Lavinsky. “Venture capital firms are comprised of individual partners and associates. If you contact the wrong one, you&#8217;ll be dead in the water.”</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>5. Send the VC partner or associate a &#8220;teaser&#8221; email</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>“You don&#8217;t want to send the VC a full business plan or executive summary initially. Rather, you need to send them a ‘teaser’ email to see if they are interested. You don&#8217;t want to ‘over shop’ your deal,” Lavinsky says.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>“Once the VC ‘bites’ on your teaser email, the next step is generally to send them your business plan. Following that you&#8217;ll do an in-person presentation(s), receive and negotiate a term sheet, and then sign a formal agreement and receive your funding check.”</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>According to Lavinsky, the process of finding a venture capitalist is a lot of work, but when that multi-million check is finally received, the entrepreneur can significantly grow their company and it will have been well worth the effort.</p>

According to IBISWorld industry analyst Andrea Alegria, “demand for scaffolding contractors is directly driven by the levels of residential and non-residential construction activity. With the recovery in residential construction starting to gain traction, demand for specialist trades is also improving. Scaffolding services will grow significantly as pent-up demand, population growth and improved access to credit boost demand for new housing. A large population cohort (Generation Y) will reach first-time homebuyer status and will likely encounter a limited inventory of new homes, which will increase demand for housing. Also, because of deferred maintenance during the down economy, a growing number of properties will need rehabilitation or upgrades, which will necessitate the use of scaffolding.” </p>

<p>However, commercial construction activity remains weak; commercial construction tends to lag the overall economy by 12-24 months (due in part to the length of construction contracts and industry backlog). Alegria adds that “towards the end of the five year forecast period, scaffolding companies will continue to experience strong demand from power plants, refineries and petrochemical plants and their contractors. Factories and manufacturing facilities that expand operations will also require industry products. Furthermore, federal, state and local governments will likely recover from depleted budgets as a result of lower tax collection during the down economy. As a result, increased government spending will lead to construction and repair of bridges, tunnels and other infrastructure that require scaffolding.”</p>

<p>Scaffolding Contractors specialize in putting up scaffolds and platforms needed for some types of new building construction, along with painting, renovation, and restoration of all sorts of structures. Scaffolding contractors can also work on offshore oil rigs, power stations, and projects such as parade viewing platforms. Scaffolding is typically made from metal pipes, which are connected together to create a frame that can be re-configured as needs change. As scaffolding is put up, platforms are established for holding tools and walking around worksites. When the job is finished, contractors in this industry dismantle the scaffolding. </p>

<p>The industry is highly regulated and contractors that install scaffolding must meet stringent safety standards imposed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Nonetheless, the industry has low barriers to entry as most OSHA certification can be obtained through short educational courses. Moreover, expensive capital equipment can be leased, or certain jobs subcontracted to other companies. Entry to the commercial space is more difficult that residential; jobs are much larger and require a more specialized skill-set. As such, scaffolding work in the commercial construction space tends to have a higher market share concentration than the residential sector. Like other specialty contracting trades, residential specialists are highly fragmented and include a large number of small operators that focus on small or regional markets. The basis for competition varies across the many segments of this industry, but generally involves a mix of pricing competitiveness, proven workmanship and timeliness.
